"The Poet's Fire" is the third episode of Season 1, and overall the third produced hour of The Following. It first aired on February 4, 2013.


A new follower is found in Rick Kester, who is on a determined path to follow through on Carroll’s orders. Hardy and the FBI attempt to predict Rick’s course of revenge, which leads to a surprising outcome. Meanwhile, Paul’s jealousy over Emma and Jacob’s relationship leads to a breaking point, and the origin of Hardy and Carroll’s relationship is revealed.


  • The title is a reference to Rick Kester who plays a poet with fire.
  • Three recurring characters die in this episode: Jordan Raines, Rick Kester and Troy Riley.
  • This is the first episode in which more then one follower dies.
  • This is the first episode to show the death of a recurring follower. In fact, two recurring followers die in this episode.
  • This episode marks the first on-screen kills by Ryan Hardy.
